Day 17

I just looked at the title and saw "Day 17" wow, 17 days is a long time isn't it haha. Not sure I've been away from home for any longer than this amount of time before. Anyway....today is Monday, everybody's favorite day! Well...maybe not.... So today (Columbus Day) we had tickets to see "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" easily my favorite late-night show on right now. Craig is completely nuts, but I love him. The show is full of completely random crap, it follows a very standard formula, but yet somehow it manages to keep me entertained night in and night out. Definitely a testament to the comedic genius of Mr. Ferguson.

yay smog!

The show didn't start until 3:30 (allegedly) so we needed to figure out what to do until then. So I suggested we explore a bit before going. First, we decided to head over to the Griffith Observatory (note to the I'm sure very few people who have been following this blog consistently - yes I know we went to the Griffith Observatory about a week or so ago, but my mom and Laura wanted to see it.) So we drove up the big ol' hill, and much to my surprise, the roads were not lined with cars like they were the last time we came. This was a nice surprise to me, and since it was a holiday, it was even more surprising, I guess I stupidly assumed that people were out doing other things today. Anyway, we went up towards the observatory and started looking at the great views of the city.

After taking a bunch of pictures, we decided to go into the building. Little bit of a problem. The observatory is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Ooooooohhhhh....... Finally put 2 and 2 together. Yeah, there was nobody there because the place wasn't even open. Duh. Well, since we were already up there, we walked around the observatory a bit and took some pics of the city. Afterwards, we started driving towards CBS Television City, but since we still had plenty of time, I decided to take a detour into Beverly Hills.

We drove around Beverly Hills a bit, though we couldn't see too many houses since most of them had gates and other stuff obscuring your view. We found the famous Rodeo Drive, and drove down it. The little white, dirty Mazda 3 probably felt a little out of place among lots of Mercedes, Lexus, BMWs and other expensive luxury cars on the road. Whatever. Eventually we started towards Television City again, but since it was well past noon, we were all pretty hungry, so we stopped in at Beverly Center and had lunch at California Pizza Kitchen.

After a nice lunch, we headed down towards the nearby Television City. I dropped off my mom and aunt, and Krysta and I tried to find parking, which was certainly not easy. Little side note - I'm curious as to why this place is called "Television City" as it only seems that Craig and his former employee Drew Carey (Price is Right) are the only shows that film here. I certainly got the impression that a ton of CBS shows film at WB studios, and Letterman films in New York, so who else films here? I honestly don't know. Doesn't matter I guess. Anyway, after finally finding some parking, Krysta and I ran (yes ran with my big ugly boot and all) over to get in line to make sure we saw the show.

After waiting in line for a good half hour or so, some guy said "Are you guys tired of waiting out on the f***ing street?" and something like "If you're offended by swearing, you're in the wrong f***ing place!" Ok....I'm generally not offended by swearing, but this guy definitely rubbed me the wrong way haha. Yeah wow you're quite a rebel using the f-word. Dude come on, you're not shocking anyone by saying that. Anyway....we eventually got into the place and were "warmed up" by this dude named Chucky B. William had gone to Craig's show about a month ago and told me that this guy was pretty crude, so I was curious to see what the reactions of my female companions were for his act. To my surprise, he wasn't that bad, and my mom was actually busting a gut over a lot of things he said!

Eventually the show actually started, and I finally got to see one of my heroes in person. (Yeah I said it, don't care what anybody thinks if I call a crazy Scottish comedian a hero of mine.) The show started with the monologue, which is different than what you see on TV, which usually starts with the cold open (which was filmed immediately after the monologue). During the cold open, Craig brought up a girl named Alex and talked to her a bit. Betty White followed, in which she announced her candidacy for the presidency! If you haven't seen it, look it up on YouTube, pretty hilarious segment. The Tweetmails followed, and Alex joined Geoff Peterson for the segment, and it was clear a romance was budding between the two of them. Pretty surprising to see a gay robot skeleton attracted to a pretty 20 something girl haha. Claire Danes followed for two segments, and then we found out "what we learned on the show tonight" with Alex's mom, who seemed to disapprove of her daughter's new relationship with the robot.

That pretty much wrapped up the (awesome) show, though we did get a short stand up routine from a young comedian from Boston (Yay!) and then we headed back towards Burbank. We picked up William along the way, and most of us headed to dinner at the Black Angus Steakhouse. After hanging out a bit, I drove William back, and pretty much called it a night...
